Changing careers
I first identify myself as a woman. I am a 45 year old woman and a mother. I worked as an ICU nurse for 21 years, at which point I could no longer be part of what felt like prolonging death as opposed to making death a natural and inevitible process for us all. I went into nursing to help people and what my job had become was far from that idea. I am not meaning to sound totally negative about what I did for my career, but it was really becoming emotional and physically taxing. At the age of 41, I decided to make a complete about face. I self taught myself as much as I could about computers and in particular a hospital based informatics program. I applied and was the successful candidate for an instructor to teach this program across the province of NS. At the end of about a two year period, the entire province had the program implemented and that job came to an end. I returned to ICU. That was such a difficult thing to do because I got a taste of the real world, the world that doesn't involve death, dying and suffering every time you go to work. From that day forward I made a commitment to myself to move on, move out of the hospital setting and do whatever I felt I could become qualified to do. A few months later I applied for a permanent full-time job as an application specialist for the same program that I had taught across the province. So, really, you can teach an 'old dog new tricks'. At 43, I took that job and have continued to work at it, grow and become quite good at what I do. In my job now, no one is dying in the same room, I do not deal with grieving families and patients. I feel that I have come full circle in the respect that I entered my career in a job that was challenging, rewarding and interesting and now I have totally changed careers and feel I am in a good place again. Since I have taken this job, I have started a new career as well. I have, again, taught myself, with the help of my business partner, php, html, etc. to the extent that I was able to build a great website, albeit new and growing, I think it has a great deal of potential and we are moving in the right direction. So, again, I have changed careers, although I won't be quitting my day job anytime in the near future, I really enjoy where my careers has taken me. I hope you have enjoyed my tale of 'old dog, new tricks'. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do it, because I am proof that you can! Cheers, The Princess |
