Quick reference for reading a 12 lead E.K.G. / Electrocardiogram

12 lead EKGs are tracings that are obtained via a EKG machine connected to the patients limbs and chest in a specific pattern. They are used to diagnose a heart attack, (myocardial infarction).

The tracing is separated into different sections. Inferior, lateral, anterior and septal areas. Each area represents an area of the heart, ie, the lateral leads represent the lateral portion of the left ventrical. The left ventrical is the largest chamber of the heart and the chamber that 12 lead EKG takes a tracing of in the cardiogram.

Inferior leads are II, III and AVF.
Lateral leads are I, AVL, V5 and V6.
Anterior leads are V1 and V2.
Septal leads are V3 and V4.
The only lead unmentioned is AVR. (Not used dierectly when diagnosing a heart attack, (myocardial infarction).

When you look at these leads, you look for ST depression, elevation or inversion. M.I.s are show by the presence of 'Q' wave, that show prior to the QRS wave. If the changes show in two of the three leads involved in an 'area' of the heart, i.e. inferior portion, it would show damage or injury to that specific area.

Contributor's Note

I hope this makes it easier to understand how a Dr can do an EKG on your heart and simple looks at it for a few seconds to diagnose a heart attack or not. I am an ICU with 21 years experience. If you want further explaination, leave me a note.
